What You Will Do
This position will be ?lled at either the Paralegal 2 or Paralegal 3 level, depending upon the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) and job complexities will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.
Los Alamos National Laboratory's (LANL's) O?ce of General Counsel is seeking a paralegal to provide professional support to attorneys and sta? in its Litigation Management Group. The primary responsibility for this position will be to support attorneys in all aspects of case management.
Paralegal 2 (55,400 - $88,000)
Responsibilities of the position include:
Perform factual investigations, legal research, draft basic litigation documents including motions, propound and respond to written discovery, prepare for depositions, motion hearings and trial, review and analyze documents.
Perform witness and custodian interviews, and collect, compile and analyze documents, electronic data and facts.
Manage eDiscovery for complex cases (e.g., identifying, preserving, and culling data) and maintain electronic matter management systems and files.
Utilize current technologies and software programs with proficiency, as well as ECF filing procedures in federal and state (NM) court.
Act as an agent for supervising attorneys consistent with the rules governing professional responsibility for lawyers and paralegals.
Paralegal 3 (67,900 - $107,700)
In addition to the duties outlined above, the Paralegal 3 will be required to:
Be familiar with the rules, requirements and procedures set by federal or state boards, courts, and administrative bodies related to their particular area of practice.
Although the paralegal 3 is not a manager, he or she is frequently called upon to mentor less senior paralegals, to review their work, and to ensure that it is appropriate to be presented to the supervising attorney.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
At least 5 years' experience as a litigation paralegal in a law office or similar setting.
Experience in document (paper and electronically-stored information) identification, collection, review, production and document management.
Experience in eDiscovery workflows and review platforms/software.
Demonstrated ability to work as a part of a team and independently, under pressure and with minimal supervision.
Experience working on multiple projects with conflicting and often changing priorities and deadlines. Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills.
Excellent organization and writing skills.
Ability to effectively interact with outside counsel and clients as well as staff at all levels.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Willingness and ability to become proficient with Mac operating system and various legal and matter management software.
Proofreading and cite-checking skills.
Bachelor's degree in a related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Ability to gain sufficient knowledge and capability to progress to Paralegal 3 within a maximum of three years, depending upon experience at initial hire.
Additional Job Requirements for Paralegal 3:
Must have at least 8 years' experience as a litigation paralegal in a law office or similar setting.
Experience with the rules, requirements and procedures set by federal or state boards, courts, and administrative bodies related to their particular area of practice
Graduate degree in a related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Demonstrated ability to perform legal research and use of Lexis.
Experience with complex litigation, including construction, class action, employment and patent litigation.
Experience with federal Freedom of Information Act.
Education: Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience (e.g., paralegal certificate and 2 years of related experience). The paralegal 3 position requires at least 8 years of directly related experience.
Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements
for access to classified matter.
Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
