The Counsel, Litigation is responsible for the strategy, management and budgeting of significant global litigation and government investigation matters facing the Company. The job-holder will work independently under the supervision and direction of the Deputy General Counsel, BioPharmaceuticals and will have the experience and judgment to be able to identify and manage significant litigation risk on his/her own initiative.
The purpose of the role is to:
independently manage contract disputes, product liability litigations, government investigation matters, as well as IP and other litigations; partner with outside counsel and internal AZ stakeholders to undertake strategies that bolster AstraZeneca's defense positions, slow the growth of litigations, and facilitate the ability of the BioPharmaceuticals business area to achieve its objectives. oversee the establishment of appropriate budgets and ensure that costs are delivered within acceptable budget variances. assist the BioPharmaceuticals business area to assure that its operations are conducted in compliance with all applicable laws and regulations. optimize the legal position of the BioPharmaceuticals business area in all of its endeavors. manage legal risk appropriately in the assigned AstraZeneca client area, with assistance as appropriate from the Deputy General Counsel.
The Counsel is expected to act as a role model to other legal staff and demonstrate leadership within the client teams and legal teams in which he/she operates.
The position has a direct impact on business activities with significant or very high reputational and financial value and risk to the business.
Personally handle complex and business-critical legal work in the assigned area.
Select, assign, oversee and evaluate the work of external counsel to ensure delivery of the appropriate level of service.
Consistently make logical, well-reasoned and timely decisions; fully examine risks and consequences before making difficult decisions.
Develop and implement cost-efficient legal strategies and policies in the assigned area consistent with stakeholder expectations.
Develop and implement initiatives to reduce and control the expenditure of external legal costs in a prudent manner.
Under general supervision of Deputy General Counsel, BioPharmaceuticals, manage the activities of outside counsel, and supervise the work of in-house Paralegals.
Provide efficient, value-adding and proactive legal advice in the assigned area in order to mitigate present and potential future risk and exposure.
Stay abreast of legal implications of developing external trends and develop a "bit picture" perspective.
Be a leader amongst AstraZeneca senior management and departmental colleagues, and a Legal business partner to senior clients.
Maintain focus on AstraZeneca's business priorities, including during periods of sustained pressure.
Actively seek to improve existing ways of working.
Identify the need for and maintain appropriate collaborations with other Legal support areas to ensure a seamless global service to clients.
Maintains appropriate collaborations within the US Legal Department and more broadly with other Legal support areas globally; routinely seeks out others to share information, create solutions and works as a team player.
Educate and train clients in the assigned area on important legal issues relative to their area of responsibility.
Handle special projects assigned by the Deputy General Counsel, BioPharmaceuticals.
Law degree and admission to the bar of at least one state.
5+ years relevant legal practice experience in legal department of corporation or major law firm, preferably working with the pharmaceutical industry.
Proficiency in the laws relating to the approval, sale and marketing of pharmaceutical products and experience in counseling on legal issues in this area.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills, and experience in effectively working on and collaborating with business teams with ability and willingness to develop these skills further.
