General Scope and Summary
Sage Therapeutics is seeking a talented, dedicated, integrative thinker as a patent attorney/agent who will play a key role in shaping our rapidly growing IP portfolio. This high visibility position offers a broad range of responsibilities and a fantastic growth opportunity.
Roles and Responsibilities
Provide clear and actionable intellectual property advice through all phases of patient-focused drug research, development, and commercialization.
Create and execute global IP strategies for Sage's various pipeline assets
Manage intellectual property risks within the Company's programs and pipeline.
Assist with developing and streamlining IP policies and processes within Sage;
Partner with the Discovery team in identifying new inventions, conducting prior art searches, and provide IP counseling to internal projects;
Educate clients on important intellectual property issues and forge strong client relationships that leverage opportunities to identify, create, and protect valuable intellectual property.
Counsel company scientists on intellectual property and confidentiality issues and participate in research planning to generate supporting data for patent filings
Support the Contracts team with respect to the IP aspects of various agreements;
Manage external relationships with outside counsel
Review and oversee patent drafting and prosecution by external counsel;
Manage outside counsel to maintain prosecution docket and develop and implement strategies for US and foreign patent portfolios to strengthen and extend the company's intellectual property position
Support contested proceedings (i.e., interference, reexamination, post-examination and opposition proceedings) as they arise with prosecution
Maintain expertise in patent law and practice.
Experience, Education and Specialized Knowledge and Skills
The ideal candidate must thrive working in a fast-paced, innovative environment while remaining flexible, proactive, resourceful and efficient. Excellent interpersonal skills, ability to develop important relationships with key stakeholders, good conflict management and negotiation skills, ability to identify issues and raise to key stakeholders in order to develop relevant and realistic plans, programs and recommendations. Demonstrated ability to translate strategy into action; excellent analytical skills and an ability to communicate complex issues in a simple way and to orchestrate plans to resolve issues and mitigate risks.
Minimum of Bachelors' degree in chemistry and 4+ years additional small molecule research experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Patent Attorney or Patent Agent admitted to practice before US Patent and Trademark Office with law firm and/or pharma/biotechnology company experience required.
4+ years hands-on experience in drafting and prosecuting biotech/pharma patent applications.
Licensed and in good standing with a state bar preferred.
PhD or similar qualification in Chemistry preferred.
Understanding of U.S. and European patent law, as well as major global patent jurisdictions.
Excellent patent preparation and prosecution skills.
Proven record of counseling clients in research and development and/or clinical research programs.
Advanced knowledge of domestic and international laws, regulations, and processes relating to patents.
Strong scientific acumen with a pragmatic business focus.
Creative, collaborative approach to problem solving.
Ability to clearly articulate IP concepts and strategies to non-lawyers.
Experience working with all levels of management and consulting with key business stakeholders. An ability to influence for greater outcomes.
Attention to detail and the ability to work individually, within a multi-disciplinary team, as well as with external partners and vendors.
Possesses strong written and verbal communication skills.
